Dental Crowns in Doncaster – Everything You Should Know

Unfortunately, no matter how much you look after your teeth, there may come a time when you’ll need a dental crown. It could be that you’ve crunched down on something brittle and fractured a molar, had a fall and chipped your visible incisor, or your tooth is badly damaged through tooth decay. Whatever the reason, a tooth crown can help restore both form and function to your smile.

If you’re facing the possibility of needing dental crowns in Doncaster, don’t worry, because at Doncaster Supreme Dental, we use tooth crowns that are life-like, durable, and long-lasting. So with this in mind, here’s what you need to know…

What is a crown on a tooth?

A dental crown is a protective cover that envelops the damaged tooth. Modern-day tooth crowns are a far cry from their past cousins. Nowadays, dental crowns are made from a variety of materials that combine strengthening effects with excellent aesthetics to give a flawless look. Types of crowns include:

  • All ceramic – These offer the best aesthetic appearance as they have the ability to mimic the translucency of natural teeth enamel. They have a good strength but aren’t really suitable for back teeth where they would have to withstand high chewing forces.
  • Zirconia dental crowns – Although not quite as natural looking as all-ceramic porcelain crowns, zirconia crowns have excellent strength capabilities. As a result, they are ideal for back molars.
  • Porcelain fused to metal crowns – Commonly known as PFM’s. This type of dental crown is made up of a layer of metal with an outer layer of porcelain bonded to it. What they lack in translucent ability they make up for in strength. Excellent for back teeth, the only downside is that sometimes the porcelain can wear away, exposing the metal layer underneath. This is something to bear in mind.
  • Gold crowns – Gold dental crowns are actually made from several different alloys. They have the highest strength of any dental crown. Although they’re ideal for any location the rather obvious disadvantage (or maybe not) is the distinct gold colour.

So now you know the dental crown types, what about the procedure itself?

A dental crown procedure requires two appointments. In the first procedure we’ll…

  • Reshape the damaged tooth and take an impression which will form the basis of your permanent crown
  • Send the impression to the lab
  • Fit you with a temporary dental crown and send you on your way

During the second visit we’ll…

  • Remove the temporary crown and properly clean the damaged tooth
  • Fit the new crown and check for comfort
  • Cement your permanent dental crown into position

So there you have it – everything you need to know about dental crowns, including types of dental crown materials and the tooth crown procedure itself. Remember, you shouldn’t have to put up with a less than perfect smile, so whatever your dental problem, come and talk to the team at Doncaster Supreme Dental today.
